	Sausagefans.com is an independent, family run website founded in 2001 to help promote great British Sausages. We work on a recommendation basis, when we started the site we listed only the sausage makers which we knew and loved in our local area. As the site has developed visitors have sent us recommendations and we now have over 1000 UK recommended sausage makers on the site. We have sampled sausages from many of the sausage makers on the site. You can read our most recent reviews here. Sausage Facts There are more than 500 different recipes and flavours for sausages in the UK Over £517m was spent on sausages in 2006 in the UK The World's longest sausage was 35 miles long and weighed over 15 tonnes. The most expensive sausage in the UK was made from fillet steak with champagne and truffles and cost £20 each Over 5 million people in the UK each sausages every day Over 12 million sausages are consumed in the UK each day Although perfect at anytime of the day nearly 40% of sausages are eaten for dinner Saturday is the most popular day for eating sausages Sausages feature in nearly 1/2 all BBQs Sausage History The history of the sausage goes back at least 5,000 years to Sumeria (modern day Iraq) and by 900BC sausages were consumed like popcorn might be today and sold from sellers in the aisles of the ancient Greek theatre. Sausages were driven underground in 320AD when the Roman Emperor Constantinus I and the Catholic Churched banned sausages because of their links to pagan festivals. It was in the regin of Charles I that sausages were divided into links for the first time. During the Second World War sausages picked up the nickname bangers because when fried they used to explode with a bang (probably due to a higher water content). Sausage Press We have appeared on various TV and radio programmes as well as in the newspapers to promote British Sausages. We regularly undertake market research to assess sausage consumption, favoured cooking techniques, sources of purchase, spend on sausages etc. Our most recent research is into home sausage making which we have found is on the increase as more and more people become concerned about additives and preservatives.
